John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil (Chicago Cubs) Frank Robinson became the first African American manager in MLB when he was hired by the Cleveland Indians for the 1975 season. Buck O'Neill was the first African American hired as a coach for a team in MLB. He was hired by the Chicago Cubs in May, 1962.

(Just heard on WGN broadcast that Ernie Banks in 1973 managed a game after the Cubs Whitey Lockman was tossed out of a game, so technically he was the first black to manage a game. Oh, the Cubs won in 12 innings.)

Larry Doby.

Doby took over the Chicago White Sox from Bob Lemon in 1978, 75 games into the schedule, and managed the team to a 37-50 record for the rest of the season. He was replaced as manager by Don Kessinger to start the 1979 season.

In 1884, Moses Fleetwood Walker -- very proud of his African heritage -- was the catcher for the Toledo Blue Stockings of the American Association, recognized then (and still) as a major league.

Whether or not he was preceded by another black player -- William White, in 1879 with the Providence Grays -- in the major leagues can be disputed.

This would make Jackie Robinson as the second black major league Baseball player.

In the modern era, it was Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers, who signed Jackie Robinson to a professional contract on August 28, 1945. Robinson spent the 1946 season playing for the Dodgers' minor-league team in Montreal, Canada. He broke into the major leagues on April 15, 1947.
