This young man kicked for the New Orleans Saints in the 1970s. His claim to fame was that he kicked the longest field goal in NFL history up to that time. Tom was born with part of his kicking foot missing. He wore a special shoe that many felt gave him and advantage (flat toe). The was before soccer style kicking became popular in the NFL. Tom Dempsey played 11 seasons between 1969-1979 for the Saints, Eagles, Rams, Oilers, and Bills. As of the 2007 season, he holds the NFL record for longest field goal made at 63 yards (this record has been tied by Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos in 1998). He was born without toes on his right foot, which was his kicking foot, and wore a kicking shoe with a straight 'toe' area. He is currently a school teacher in the suburbs of New Orleans, Louisiana. If you click on the 'Tom Dempsey Shoe' link on this page, you can see a picture of his kicking shoe.
