Keokuk was a prominent leader of the Sauk tribe, born around 1780, known for his role during the early 19th century as a negotiator and advocate for Native American rights. He played a crucial role in resisting U.S. expansion into Native lands and worked to maintain peace between Native Americans and settlers. Keokuk is particularly noted for his leadership during the Black Hawk War in 1832, where he sought to protect his people's interests amid growing tensions. He later moved to a reservation in Iowa, where he continued to influence Native American affairs until his death in 1848.
