It was Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Guillermo "Willie" Hernandez, who was instrumental in the team's road to the 1984 World Series championship.
Hernandez posted a 9-3 record and a 1.92 earned run average. He appeared in 80 games and saved 32 of them. He struck out 112 in 140 innings pitched.
Hernandez also won the Cy Young Award that season.
The Tigers, who were 104-58 during the regular season, won their first world championship since 1968, defeating the San Diego Padres in five games. Hernandez had two saves in the Series.
