There are lots of rumors and legends, however, of other reasons. One famous legend is that the owner of the Red Sox needed money to fund a play; however that appears to be unlikely.

Only the Yankees were really willing to make a deal for him- the president of the American League hated the then-owner of the Red Sox, and forbade other teams from dealing with him. The White Sox were also willing, but the infamous "Black Sox Scandal" put an end to that.
