According to mlb.com, the Braves are "the oldest continuously operating professional sports franchise in America," founded in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings, not to be confused with the Red Sox who eventually broke away from their NL counterpart and became part of the AL in 1901 after half the team split due to contract issues. The 1st team established were the Cincinnatti Red Stockings (Aka: Braves) which broke away to Boston after its 1st season and the Braves franchise started. The "Reds" franchise was started later on with the name still originating from its roots as the Red Stockings.
The Braves and the Cubs were charter members of the National League when it was founded in 1876. The Cubs played in Chicago and were known as the White Stockings. The Braves played in Boston and were known as the Red Caps. The Pittsburgh Pirates were the oldest team to keep the same name since establishment.
The oldest(still operating as of 2012)franchise in American sports history began as the Boston Red Stockings in 1871,formed after the Cinncinati team disolved. Manager Harry Wright, brother George (along with 2 players)moved to Boston, teamed with Iyers Adams and began the Boston Red Stockings. Today you know them as the Atlanta Braves. My source: Baseball Almanac
The organization now known as the Cincinnati Reds did not exist until 1882, when it was part of the American Association. It did not become a National League team until 1890.
The National League team playing in Chicago has a continuous history since 1876. The team now known as the Braves has also existed since then, although they have changed their city more than once. The NL team playing in Philadelphia has had the name "Phillies" continuously since 1883. All three of these organizations played against other teams in a league with a set schedule.
The Cincinnati Red Stockings were, from 1869 till 1871, a team that paid its players a salary. As such, they were the first professional team, but never played in a league that had a set schedule or contracts that applied between teams. As such, they were never a Major League Baseball team.
