While Vaitek may still be the captain of the Red Sox, catchers are rarely team captains. All teams do not have captains, but those that do will usually have a middle infielder as captain, such as Derek Jeter. A team captain is usually an everyday player and most catchers do not play everyday, due to the wear and tear on their bodies. Some notable exceptions would be Joe Mauer, Jorge Posada.
