Eddie Arcaro [February 19, 1916 - November 4, 1997] is considered the best rider to have ever played at the Kentucky Derby. Specifically, Arcaro is a five-time Kentucky Derby winner. He in fact is considered the greatest jockey in American horse racing history. That honor comes from the fact of his being one of only two jockeys to win the Derby five times. But he also is the only jockey to have won the U.S. Triple Crown twice: in 1941 on Whirlaway, and in 1948 on Citation.

From the first Kentucky Derby of May 17, 1875 until the most recent Derby of May 1, 2010, the best time has been just under 2 minutes. That record has been met only two times thus far. The first and best running time was the 1 minute 59-2/5 second win by Secretariat [March 30, 1970 - October 4, 1989] in 1973. The second and next best running time was the 1 minute 59-4/5 second win by Monarchos [b. 1998] in 2001.

'FuPeg' is the nickname of Fusaichi Pegasus [foaled April 12, 1997]. He won the 2007 Derby, with Kent Desormeaux [b. February 27, 1970] as his jockey. His unusual name honors his owner Fusao Sekiguchi [b. December 20, 1935], lays claim to being '#1' or 'the best' ['-ichi'], and memorializes the winged horse of ancient Greek mythology.
