Answer:

There are many lists of opinions on this. One such list on the internet gives the following as the best Electric Guitar players:

  • BB King,
  • Chuck Berry,
  • Eric Clapton,
  • Jimi Hendrix (called the "Best Ever" by Rolling Stone),
  • Jimmy Page,
  • Johnny Ramone,
  • Keith Richards,
  • Les Paul,
  • Stevie Ray Vaughan

Some of the best acoustic guitar players include:

  • Charlie Byrd
  • Charo (no kidding)
  • Chet Atkins
  • Craig Chaiquico
  • Earl Klugh
  • Jesse Cook
  • John Fahey
  • Leo Kottke
  • Ottmar Liebert
  • Paco de Lucia
  • Tommy Emmanuel

Additional common opinions:

Among rock players, one player who is universally lauded is Jeff Beck. More are: Edward Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Mick Mars.

Angus Young and Herman Li (See the related links below for a YouTube video of "Through the Fire and the Flames". If you get the right video, about half way through you'll see the best guitar playing!)

CHRIS DAIR has to be included in any guitarist list on the net as one of the top players of both electric and acoustic guitar.

Buddy Whittington out of Fr. Worth, Texas, (of recent lead player for John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers), now touring with Gary Moore in UK.

Gypsy Django Reinhardt was a virtuoso in the twenties who changed the approach to guitar playing and has influenced many modern guitar players. Eddie Van Halen's Guitar Hero was (is), Allan Holdsworth. Robben Ford is a great blues guitar player. Al Di Meola is a great jazz player. Buckethead is a great new guitar player. Eric Johnson is an awesome, very lyrical and precise guitar player. Billy Gibbons, of ZZ Top; Delta blues player, Robert Johnson; innovative Stanley Jordan; classical guitarists, Sharon Isbin, Andres Segovia, John Williams, Russian, Anna Likhacheva, Paraguayan, Berta Rojas. Let's see...jazz great, Joe Pass, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, George Benson; Eric Clapton; Mark Knopfler, of Dire Straits; Steve Morse, of Dixie Dregs fame who now plays for Deep Purple; Mary Ford, who played with Les Paul; Lita Ford (not related), and Joan Jett; Bonnie Raitt; Nina Gerber.

There are many, but, in my opinion, to name the (average person's) top 5, in no particular order:

Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Eric Clapton and Joe Satriani.

I should point out that, although these are some of the best known guitarists, many musicians would not include any of the above in a top ten skill list.

Hope that helps
