Who invented the national hockey league?

The NHL was founded by J. Ambrose O'Brien (Montreal Canadiens); James Strachan (Montreal Wanderers); Tommy Gorman, Ted Dey and Martin Rosenthal (Ottawa Senators); and Mike Quinn (Quebec Bulldogs). They invited the Toronto Arena Company (who eventually became the Maple Leafs) to also ice a team since the Quebec franchise was financially unable to start playing in the 1917-18 season.

The NHL was created by four teams: Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers and Quebec Bulldogs. However the first four teams to play in the NHL were the Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, and Toronto Arenas, the latter being a temporary team. "The NHL was formed in 1917 when four of the five owners of the National Hockey Association teams decided to get rid of the fifth owner, a Mr. Edward Livingstone, whom they didn't like. The four simply formed a new league and left out the owner of the fifth team from the NHA. The new league was called the National Hockey League, operated with four teams,Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers and Toronto Arenas. A franchise was granted to the Quebec City Bulldogs but they didn't start play until the 1918-19 season. When the Wanderers' arena burned down the new NHL had to finish the season with only three teams and barely survived. However, they did and the rest is hockey history!!"

Hockey is played as a team, so there can't be a single person. There would have been 12 men on the ice when the first puck was dropped. The first game was on Dec. 19, 1917 when the Montreal Wanderers played the visiting Toronto Arenas, Defenseman Dave Ritchie scored the first goal.
