The Red Army, was started by Vladimir Lenin who wanted to conver the Russian government into Karl Marx's principles. It started as a communist militia, who overthrew the Russian monarchy and the Russian provisional government. Eventually becoming the Soviet Union's official military force.

Leon Trotsky commanded the Red Army. Immediately after the Russian Revolution of October 1917, Trotsky organized the army and commanded it during the Russian Civil War. Vladimir Lenin was head of the new government, but he did not actually command the Red Army in action.

There is no Red Army in WW1. The Red Army belongs to WW2. It is because the Communist USSR had adopted the Red Flag as its symbol, the flag of the proletarat as Marx would have it known.
