The name Yankee was adopted during World war I as (Yanks) was a popular phrase of the day for Americans-especially the Doughboys in Europe (GI was not used in World War l) Yankee Stadium, the current and about to be demolished one was built in l922-23, the House that Ruth Built. Ruth"s highest ever batting average led the Yankees- but not the league- in l923, this average was .393. The Mets only date from l960 and Shea Stadium was erected in l962 modernized somewhat to harmonize with the l964-65 Fair Grounds with which it shared subway and LIRR stops. There is your answer.
