The Yankees were established as a Major League- NY American League team in l903 under the name of the Highlanders. The name Yankee was adopted during World war I as (Yanks) was a popular phrase of the day for Americans-especially the Doughboys in Europe (GI was not used in World War l) Yankee Stadium, the current and about to be demolished one was built in l922-23, the House that Ruth Built. Ruth"s highest ever batting average led the Yankees- but not the league- in l923, this average was .393. The Mets only date from l960 and Shea Stadium was erected in l962 modernized somewhat to harmonize with the l964-65 Fair Grounds with which it shared subway and LIRR stops. There is your answer. Up to a point the NL Mets were (The successor to the Brooklyn Dodgers) as many personnel such as manager Gil Hodges came from that ballclub. they absorbed the Dodger"s fan market in Brooklyn. By the way Queens is part of the archdiocese of Brooklyn. So jmucyh for the churchy angle.
