How is chariot racing arena like?

Chariot racing was one of the most popular ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine sports. Chariot racing was often dangerous to both driver and horse as they frequently suffered serious injury and even death, but generated strong spectator enthusiasm. In ancient times, Horse racing, the ancient equivalent to Formula One. To find the origins of actual chariot racing we have to turn to Greece and the islands of the Aegean. In the fourteenth to twelfth centuries BC, first the Minoan, and later the Mycenean, culture inhabited what was subsequently seen as the cradle of European civilization. The ongoing excavations and exciting discoveries of the last hundred years are still changing our view of the world before the classic age. They have also shed some light on the development of horse racing as a sport. The masses who gathered divided into their favourite colours. The seating order reflected the different strata of Roman society with the first rows reserved for senators, high ranking officials and the Vestal Virgins. Then came the knights, the guilds and colleges and finally the common people. Even the different orders of priests had their own place. A number of vivid descriptions exist telling how the audience -- in the Circus Maximus between 100,000-250,000 -- noisily greeted the emperor, addressed him with thoroughly orchestrated chants, gained benefits, had officials suspended or simply expressed their dedication to their rulers. It was here where political events and personalities were discussed and approval or discontent expressed. Often enough riots broke out in the heated atmosphere of the races with horrific results. One after the other the chariots were released with the ones in the middle starting last. After 320m in straight lanes, a trumpet was blown, on which signal they were allowed to leave the lanes and the race began in earnest. Now they entered the U-shaped course itself, marked by two turning posts, in Greek `nyssa', with a distance of three stadiums between them, i.e. 576m. It seems most likely that there were short, middle and long distance races. Apart from these, there were different disciplines, like two- and four-handed races, or different animals were raced; foals, mares, stallions, mules and asses. It has been suggested that races with female drivers took place but this seems unlikely. As you can see, the race arena was not like a gladiator arena but the same result in the death of the competitors was acomplished.

What happened in ancient Greece at the time of the Olympics?

They were called the olympic games!

Who was the founder of the olympic games?

The first Olympics games were held in ancient Greece, hence the name.(Mount Olympus is in Greece.)Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the modern Olympic games.HerculesAccording to the ancient Greek historians, the Greeks started the Olympian Games in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. The date is controversial, as the earliest historians lived 500 years after this date, but the practice of nudity in the games was said to be introduced in 720BC, which seems to confirm the earlier date. The modern Olympic Games were revived under the initiative of Baron Pierre de Coubertin and the International Olympic Committee he founded. They were first held in 1896 in Athens, Greece. The Ancient Greeks in 393 A.DThe ancient Greeks originated the Olympics, as far back as 500 B.C. They faded away in the chaos after the fall of the Roman Empire. For over a thousand years they didn't happen - the whole Middle Ages - and then the British revived them in the 1800's.The Olympics originated in ancient Greece.See the related link for more information. The Greeks invented athletic contests and held them in honour of their gods. The Isthmos game were staged every two years at the Isthmos of Corinth. The Pythian games took place every four years near Delphi. The most famous games held at Olympia, South- West of Greece, which took place every four years. The ancient Olympics seem to have begun in the early 700 BC, in honour of Zeus. No women were allowed to watch the games and only Greek nationals could participate. One of the ancient wonders was a statue of Zeus at Olympia, made of gold and ivory by a Greek sculptor Pheidias. This was placed inside a Temple, although it was a towering 42 feet high. The games at Olympia were greatly expanded from a one-day festival of athletics and wrestling to, in 472 BC, five days with many events. The order of the events is not precisely known, but the first day of the festival was devoted to sacrifices. On the Middle Day of the festival 100 oxen were sacrificed in honor of a God. Athletes also often prayed and made small sacrifices themselves..On the second day, the foot-race, the main event of the games, took place in the stadium, an oblong area enclosed by sloping banks of earth. At Olympia there were 4 different types of races; The first was stadion, the oldest event of the Games, where runners sprinted for 1 stade, the length of the stadium(192m). The other races were a 2-stade race (384 m.), and a long-distance run which ranged from 7 to 24 stades (1,344 m. to 4,608 m.).The fourth type of race involved runners wearing full amor, which was 2-4 stade race (384 m. to 768 m.), used to build up speed and stamina for military purposes. On other days, wrestling, boxing, and the pancratium, a combination of the two, were held. In wrestling, the aim was to throw the opponent to the ground three times, on either his hip, back or shoulder. In ancient Greek wrestling biting and genital holds were illegal.Boxing became more and more brutal; at first the pugilists wound straps of soft leather over their fingers as a means of deadening the blows, but in later times hard leather, sometimes weighted with metal, was used. In the pancratium, the most rigorous of the sports, the contest continued until one or the other of the participants acknowledged defeat.Horse-racing, in which each entrant owned his horse, was confined to the wealthy but was nevertheless a popular attraction. The course was 6 laps of the track, with separate races for whereupon the rider would have no stirrups. It was only wealthy people that could pay for such training, equipment, and feed of both the rider and the horses. So whichever horse won it was not the rider who was awarded the Olive wreath but the owner. There were also Chariot races, that consisted of both 2-horse and 4-horse chariot races, with separate races for chariots drawn by foals. There was also a race was between carts drawn by a team of 2 mules, which was 12 laps of the stadium trackDemetrius Vikelas and Pierre de CoubertinThe Ancient Greeks invented the Olympics as a way to release tension between them and the neighboring countries. The games were held in Athens, Greece. The discus throw and the relay races were the first Olympic games.
