Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky were the main rivals to become leader of the Soviet Union after Lenin died. Other rivals were Grigori Zinoviev, Lev Kamenev and Nikolai Bukharin, but they were fairly minor compared to Trotsky and Stalin.
