Early stick and ball games were played in Europe in the 1700's. These games migrated to the colonies. In the 1840's a sportswriter in New York by the name of Alexander Joy Cartwright wrote down the rules. They were soon followed by many clubs. Baseball was spread widely throughout the U.S. as a result of the Civil War.

There is some evidence- and a popular media cartoonist- Robert J Ripley- championed this idea in the twenties and possibly later- that what we now know as (baseball) evolved ( not the same thing, of course) from an American Indian form of sun-worship called the Sun Dance. The four bases are symbolic of the four seasons, being a form of Solar worship- it was not performed at night or in inclement weather! ( still true in the last part- ball games can be rained out) there was a huge opposition to Night Baseball when it first became feasible- it was feasible as early as the Teens- with developments by GE and Westinghouse for outdoor lighting systems ( which indirectly also gave rise to Drive-In theaters, a different topic)- Okay- three Baseball teams have Indian motifs- as they would say, Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves, and stretching things a little ( to animal totems) Chicago Cubs- which are understood to mean Bear cubs( it was Wrigley- chewing-gum titan, who owned this team and was adamantly opposed to Night Baseball. The argument was embellished ( by Ripley and others using cartoons!) it was understood at one time the base paths were dug-in trenches with spoil banks and communicated with the dug-out which is still used. The number nine- nine players, innings- the Nine Mointh (Growing season)- the three overlapping winter months not usable. it is an interesting theory and was also embraced by the ATSF advertising cartoon character- sketching a diamond in the dust- with a stick- Chico in ads for the Atcheson, Topeka, and Santa Fe railway system.
