The rumors are that yes, he had a girlfriend. In fact, on the night of his death, he was flying to meet with his girlfriend after having a fight with his wife. In Puerto Rico, New Year's Eve is a huge holiday that is spent with close family. For Roberto Clemente to decide that he was going to fly on New Year's Eve to go anywhere, is highly implausible. He was, however, a great humanitarian. Thus, when he died, his manager developed the plausible cover story that he was on a mission to help the people of Nicaragua after an earthquake. The earthquake occured on Dec. 23rd. So, one would wonder why Roberto Clemente waited 1 week to go to help the people of Nicaragua on the day of one of the most celebrated holidays in Puerto Rico.
Roberto Clemente carried gallons of milk to the store and back. He loved baseball. At night he would play and through the baseball up to the cealing in bed. He died sadly after trying to help people in need. If he didnt go on the plane or if the pilot knew the weight the plane would carry he would be 75 years old today. He was the best of the best.Nicest man in baseball history. He was the best row model anyone in the world could ever have.

The first hispanic baseball player elected into the Hall of Fame was Roberto Clemente in 1973.
The plane was taking off in a very bad storm that evening...as well as many other factors....the pilot was supposedly under scrutiny about his history of recent past, he apparantly had license issues...or possibly violations...not sure if alchohol was one of them. But the thing that stood out most to all was the plane had previous issues as well, and it was said to be overweight with its cargo, and fate would have it that Clemente would have been on the plane to assure the supplies for the earthquake victims did in fact reach the victims and not the thieves that horded other emergency supplies, it was a dangerous trip all around and Clemente was warned not to go...but he was an incredible humanatarian and gave his life to help others....he was a role model like none other since! RIP
