According to China Zen means Chan and Chan means meditation.So as to answer your question, the tradition of Zen, Chan, Seon, Thiền, or dhyāna can be linked to Buddha and Buddism in a way. One might think of Buddha as zen or at least a follower of zen. Many people who believe in Buddhism also partake in zen. Zen is a major part of Buddhism and there is even a religion called "Zen Buddhism".
