The last Summer Olympic Games that were held in Italy took place in Rome in 1960, between 25th August and 11th September. They were the 14th edition of the Summer Olympics and a total of 83 nations participated, with a total of 5338 competitors, 4727 men and 611 women. There were 150 events for 17 sports. Rome was again one of the main candidate cities to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics, but withdrew, opting to wait to bid for the 2020 Olympics.
