The Jules Rimet Cup was the original trophy awarded to the winner of the World Cup. Jules Rimet was a former president of FIFA and was instrumental in organizing the World Cup competition in 1928. It was first presented in 1930 to Uruguay, who won that year's World Cup competition. Rimet stated that whoever won the World Cup three times would keep the trophy. In 1970, Brazil won the World Cup and was awarded the Rimet Cup to keep forever. Unfortunately, the Jules Rimet Cup was stolen in 1983 and never recovered.
The first match in the inaugural FIFA World Cup tournament was held between France and Mexico on July 13, 1930 at 15:00 UYT. Lauren Laurent, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 97, scored the first goal of the competition, in a 4 - 1 victory for France.
