Tsar Nicholas II was overthrown in the February Revolution of 1917 when he abdicated in March. Communist rule was not established until the end of October that year when the October Revolution by Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks (later renamed Communists) overthrew Russia's Provisional Government and took over.
The Russian Czar was never taken over by the Communists. Czar Nicholas II abdicated his throne in March 1917 when he lost control of the general populace and the army during the revolt by the general public. The Communists, at the time called Bolsheviks, did not take control of the country until October 1917 when they took control away from Alexander Kerensky and the Provisional Government.
There was never ‘Communist rule’ in Russia. Communism is a classless stateless society with no rulers and no government. Lenin set up a state capitalist Dictatorship.

Because he had no other choice but to fight back
Alexander Kerensky was the Russian Prime Minister who was forced to resign as a result of the Russian Revolution (and who died in exile). Czar Nicholas II had already abdicated, prior to the revolution (but was executed anyway by the vengeful Bolsheviks).
No, they didn't. The Czar was overthrown, actually forced to abdicate, by the workers, soldiers and peasants who revolted in Petrograd (St. Petersburg) in 1917. The February Revolution took Lenin, who was in Switzerland at the time, and the Bolsheviks completely by surprise. The Czar's ministers and military leaders realized the Czar no longer had any power to stop the demonstrations and strikes in Petrograd and convinced him to abdicate in March 1917.

The Russian Revolution was the civil war that Russia had for a period of time between the traditional Russian government and the Communists. The Communists would end up overthrowing the Russian government and establishing their own.

By 1922, the Russian socialist revolutionaries who had taken over Russia were known as "Communists." They had been the "Bolsheviks" until they held their Seventh Party Congress in March 1918 and adopted the name Communists. There had been other revolutionary parties, (one was the "Social Revolutionaries") besides the Bolsheviks, but the Bolsheviks were the only ones that survived until 1922.
