Social Football (Soccer) has no specific start date in Australia, since it was played sporadically across the country from the late 1870s between rival mining communities and visiting ship crews - mostly by English and Scottish natives. Organised football began with a game on Parramatta Oval (NSW) in August 1880 between Wanderers and Kings College. Wanderers won 5-0. Regards Richard Kreider Historian WA Soccer

Football and soccer are two completely different games in Australia. The terms are not interchangeable.

Football includes Rugby and AFL, and is played with an oval ball which may be kicked or handled, unlike soccer, which is played with a round ball which must be manoevered along the ground using purely one's feet. Australia's first Rugby club was established as the Sydney Football Union in 1863, while the Australian Rules version developed a few years later.

Soccer, on the other hand, came slightly later. Although originally called football, it soon lost that name. Soccer is considered to have had its origin in Australia in 1879, although it had been played in Tasmania for a couple of years prior to this.
