Sadly, Ron Hextall has not been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame (located in Toronto, CAN). And, frankly, I cannot give a decent reason why this is not so. Ron Hextall started the revolution at his position leading directly to the modern goal tender. He made a mediocre Flyers team a contender every time he stepped on the ice with a level and style of passionate play that endeared him to both fans and team mates while striking fear into his opponents. Mario Lemieux said Hextall was the most intimidating goal tender he'd ever faced. Ron Hextall was a unique individual and a unique hockey player. Rookie of the Year. Vezina Trophy. Conn Smythe (playoffs MVP even though his team lost!). The first goal tender to score a goal (unassisted) in the HISTORY of professional hockey (regular season). The first goal tender to score a goal in the playoffs.
Ron Hextall was vicious animal on the ice. Ask Chris Chelios. Ask Keith Crowderby. Ask Felix Potvin. Ask Rob Pearson. Hextall was the most violent goalie to ever play the game. He would assault you just for taking a shot or skating too close to him.
The question we should be answering is: WHY isn't Ron Hextall in the Hall of Fame?
Marc-Andre Fleury, Patrick Roy, Jarosalav Halak, Ron Hextall, Carey Price!
