The National Hockey League was formed in 1917, and featured the Toronto Arenas, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, and the Montreal Wanderers. The Wanderers arena burned down about 6 games into the season, and the team disbanded. Fortunately, the league fared better and grew. For more information on the growth of the league, look for questions about "Who are the original six teams" and the like. I'm pretty sure I've typed it before. :-)
1909
Not sure who posted 1909, but they are wrong. The NHL was founded in December 1917. First game played on Dec. 19 of that year. Lord Stanley's cup had been around for almost 25 years, and was a challenge cup before becoming the Championship trophy for the NHL. The champions of the NHL and a similar league, the PCL, would play for the cup, until 1923 when the PCL folded and the NHL took sole possession of the cup. The modern league which we all know and love, Started with the "original 6" in 1942 and lasted until '67, when the league expanded to 12 teams. The original 6 is a "coined" term used to describe the modern league, comprised of 6 players per side instead of 6 and a rover, and of coarse the league stayed at 6 teams for 25 years. Be careful using the hockey info on any wiki site. The info is quite often wrong, especially dates. This is a good reminder that you can't rely on the info posted on wiki. Anyone can post anything, and people take wiki as a reputable site, so if you post it, they'll believe it. Do your research first! NHL.com or The Hockey Hall of Fame.com are your best bets.
Hockey wasn't really "invented."
A similar sport started in Ireland as the sport of Hurley. Canadians played it on ice. This happened in Nova Scotia in the 1800's. It was called Ice Hurley for quite some time and then people started to call it Ice Hockey.
Of course, there are other stories.
Two towns claim that the first game of hockey was played there. The first is Kingston, Ontario, and the second is a small town in New Brunswick, both of which are in Canada.
It is generally accepted that the current rules for hockey evolved from students at McGill University in Montreal ("the McGill Rules") in 1875.
Around 1920 the NHL was formed by Canada. It grew. Rules evolved. For example in the 1920's you were aloud to pass forward.
Hockey is Canada's national game, but not Canada's "official sport," which is Lacrosse.
On any Saturday night, right across Canada, about 40 percent of the population is watching HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA, the longest running program on Canadian TV. It has been on for over 50 years, every Saturday night, every hockey season.
It is now played in over 80 different countries around the world.
Answer
Well, it started with guards being bored so they invented a sport that became more and more popular.
Origins in support of the aboveAccording to ice-hockey-info-blogspot.com:" In 1825 Sir John Franklin wrote that "The game of hockey played on the ice was the morning sport" while on Great Bear Lake during one of his Arctic expeditions. In 1843 a British Army officer in Kingston, Ontario, wrote "Began to skate this year, improved quickly and had great fun at hockey on the ice." "
1917, but the Stanley cup has been around since 1892 but wasn't officially given to the NHL until 1926 for the champions. It had been used in different amateur leagues in Canada as a trophy before then.
