The FA Cup was proposed on July 20th, 1871, by Charles William Alcock. He proposed that a Challenge Cup should be established in connection with the Association', giving birth to the FA Cup. A year later, Wanderers F.C. became the first winners of the FA Cup, beating Royal Engineers 1-0 at The Oval. Only 15 clubs entered the Cup, 12 played and there were 13 games in total.
