As early as 1884 two "black" players, the Walker brothers played for Toledo in the American Association, considered a "major" league at the time. There was no "official" discrimination against Black players, however, but there was defacto segregation until Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 opening the majors to Black players.
There were a few African-American players in minor leagues in the 1880s, and even one -- Fleetwood Walker -- who played on the major league (American Association) Toledo Blue Stockings. In 1883, the most respected player-manager in Baseball, Cap Anson, refused to play against Toledo if Walker took the field. Perhaps because it was becoming clear that Major League Baseball would never fully accept blacks as players, in 1885 the first all-black teams was formed.
Walker ended up injured and returned to the International League in the minors. In 1887, partially as the result of Anson's objections, that league officially banned blacks from contracts. Walker played in another minor league and, in 1888, Anson again refused to play against his team. Soon after that, baseball became unofficially segegrated until 1945.
It has never been determined why Cap Anson took such a strong stand against integration in professional baseball -- there is no reason to think that he held stronger prejudices against African-Americans than other whites of his day. It has been noted, however, that official segregation in all aspects of American life was becoming more prevelant at this time, and most likely would have occurred in baseball even if Anson had not made any complaints.
