Sunday, October 7, 1984. At Soldier Field in Chicago, IL. vs the New Orleans Saints. With 14:11 left in the 3rd quarter, it was 2nd down and 9 yards to go for a first down and the Bears leading 13-7. The play called, Toss 28 Weak, was a simple one with Payton getting the toss from QB McMahon and running between OT Covert and TE Moorehead, Payton gained 6 yards straight ahead. The crowd cheered wildly, fans, reporters and all the Bears ran onto the field to congratulate Payton. Jim Brown's long held and most prestigious NFL. record now belonged to the heavens. I'm sure no one on hand that memorable day ever thought that in 15 years and 25 days Mr. Walter Payton would join that record much too soon.
