On Jan. 5, 1998 "Pistol" Pete Maravich died of a heart attack. He was only 40 years old. An autopsy later revealed the cause of the heart attack to be a rare congenital defect. He was born without a left coronary artery and his right coronary artery was severely oversized as it had been compensating for the defect.
