Honus Wagner played for the Pittsburgh Pirates for about 10 years. He was the greatest shortstop of all time. His 1909 T-206 card is now worth millions of dollars, and is the rarest piece of cardboard in the world. The last price estimate for the card is over $3 million.

Honus Wagner retired in the middle of the 1917 season. He had a brief stint as interim manager but did not maintain the job. He retired two more times, once before the beginning of the 1908 season, but Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss made him the highest-paid player in the league, by offering him $10,000. He again briefly retired before the 1917 season, but did not quit until the season was underway.
