In college, Dave Winfield played for the University of Minnesota's Golden Gophers. In the college off season, he also played for the Alaska Goldpanners in 1971 & 1972.

Dave Winfield was drafted by the San Diego Padres and played for them from 1973-1980. Upon gaining free agency, Winfield signed with the New York Yankees and played with them until mid 1990 when he was traded to the California Angels for Mike Witt. He played the rest of the 1990 season and 1991 season for the Angels. A free agent again, he signed with the Toronto Blue Jays for the 1992 season and then for the Minnesota Twins for the 1993-1994 seasons. Winfield finished his career with the Cleveland Indians, playing in 46 games in 1995.
