The Titans began as the Houston Oilers in the American Football League in 1960. The Oilers and all teams in the American Football League merged with the teams in the National Football League in 1970. The Oilers then moved to Tennessee in 1997 and were called the Tennessee Oilers. In 1999, the name was changed from Oilers to Titans.
