The only ones who possibly would fight in the Circus Maximus or any other circus for that matter, would perhaps be the fans of the opposing teams. The Circus Maximus was a race track and that was its main function.

The Circus Maximus was popular because they have nice tricks and animals between the races. The Circus Maximus was used for chariot racing and it was very difficult to cheat in a chariot race. The chariots were almost impossible to tamper with because the racers all raced in teams, and members of the driver's team milling around the chariots in the staging area, would certainly be aware of any funny business. The only way cheating could possibly happen was by bribery. The winner's team was paid to "gang up" or block other drivers enabling their man to take the lead. However this method did not always work as the prize money in a race was often substantial and would be far more than what a driver could earn by a bribe; also the opportunity to block in a fast moving chariot race did not always present itself.
In order to participate in a chariot race one had to be a member of a team. Rome had four teams, the Reds, Whites, Blues and Greens. It's unclear as to exactly how many entries each team could have in a race, or if the various teams raced against each other in a single race or in a matchup.
