As you can imagine, there are always mixed reactions to major changes in society, we are all afraid of change. But I would think that the working class people who actually knew the objective of communism were thrilled, and yet hoping that the dictator would be responsible enough as to not convert it to a fascist Dictatorship.

A communist party was formed in the USA when Russia became a so called communist country in 1917. The fact is that the Soviet Union was never a "communist" State at all. It reached the stage of a dictatorship that helped kill millions of Russians. So more to the point of the question: "communism" never happened in the USA. It was and is a worn out political/economical piece of the dustbin of history.
Part of Kiev-Rus that later became Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. When Russians try to explain this to westerners they usually compare it to the empire of the Franks (Francia/Frankia) that subsequently became France, Germany, The low countres, Northern Italy etc.
