The simple answer is back in the 50's they did not play for money! That's right! The game seems to only be about money now but not then. Some players were only paid $1.00 a MONTH! It's incredible!! Talk about For the love of the game"!

I remember reading an article in Sports Illustrated at the time that most players had to have off season jobs in order to survive; many were car dealers or insurance dealers (they were using their name & fame) to make a decent living. If the average players salary was $35,000 the average American made around $7,000. They were relatively well paid for what they did. Today, they are all overpaid.
