Lenin was the nickname. His real name was Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov.

"Lenin" was not a nickname. It was more of an alias or pseudonym that Lenin used in place of his true last name Ulianov.

According to Orlando Figes in his book, "A People's Tragedy,", copyright Orlando Figes 1996, published in 1997 by Viking Penguin, in a footnote at page 142:

"The alias and pseudonym 'Lenin' was probably derived from the River Lena in Siberia. Lenin first used it in 1901."

Lenin had been exiled to Siberia at one time.

Lenin was also referred to as Nikolai Lenin by some people such as the American writer Louise Bryant (wife of John Reed, author of 'Ten Days that Shook the World' about the Russian Revolution) and journalist George Seldes.
