Eric Liddell, 1924 Olympic gold medalist for the 400 meters, was born in 1902 in North China, the second son of Scottish missionaries. He attended school in China until he was six, when he was enrolled in a boarding school in England. When his parents came home for visits, the family all stayed together in Edinburgh, Scotland. While attending in school in England, Liddell became known for being the fastest runner in Scotland and was called the "Flying Scotsman".
