In 1923, Ruth, as the regular right fielder for the World Champion New York Yankees, hit .393, led the Majors in home runs with 41, RBIs with 170, slugging average at .764, walks with 170 and also struck out 93 times to lead the Majors in that category. He also played in all 152 games the Yankees played. In addition he was named the best player in the American League, an award given prior to the beginning of the Most Valuable Player Award that wasn't established until 1931. Ruth never won the MVP award.
