I take it you are referring to the year he broke Roger Maris's record in 1998. McGwire hit 70 Home runs that year and hit 65 the following year in 1999. Mark McGwire's 63rd Home Run ball sold for $50,000. at the same auction that saw McGwire's 70th Home Run ball sell at a record $3 million in 1999. Keep in mind this is also before the steroid scandal, and both baseballs might sell at a much lower price today. Mark McGwire's record setting 70th Home Run established the single season home run record at that time before Barry bonds hit 73 in 2001. Other noted Home run balls sold for as follows: Babe Ruth 1933 All Star Game - $805,000 (2006) Hank Aaron 755th - $650,000 (1999) Barry Bonds 73rd of season - $450,000. (2001) Mickey Mantle 500th - $144,000. (1996) Barry Bonds 700th - $102,000 (2005) Barry Bonds 70th of season - $14,400 (2007) NOTE: This ball previously sold for $60,000 and it was recently valued at about half that amount. Steroid suspicions are hampering the value of collectibles from more recent years. Ken Griffey Jr. 500th (2004) - Frank Thomas 500th (2007) $0 (both given back to player by fan) For more information on the latest collecting news, announcements, and articles of interest visit the KeyMan's Collectors Corner. I think that Rodriguez will break the record, and if he does at least he will earn it. Unlike Bonds who took steroids. But I think that A-Rod will do it because he has a lot of potential. But you also have to look at Sammy Sosa, because in 2007 he hit that unbelievable #600 home run but if you really look at him you know that he is getting old, and Rodriguez is only in his 30's, so yes A-Rod has a better chance than all of the other ball players. I was in agreement with this until A-Rod's steroid admission. Unfortunately now the home run record if broken again, will still be tainted. A-Rod will probably break it and one thing he'll have going for him is that unlike Barry Bonds, the record will still take a little time to achieve. The fans might be a little bit more forgiving in his case. As far as what his steroid use will do to him regarding the Hall of Fame is another story. You see what Mark McGwire and Rafael Palmiero have to go through.
In 1986, Mark McGwire played in 18 games, all for the Oakland Athletics, and batting in all of them. He had 53 at bats, getting 10 hits, for a .189 batting average, with 9 runs batted in. He was walked 4 times, and was hit by the pitch 1 time. He struck out 18 times. He hit 1 double, 0 triples, and 3 home runs.
Babe Ruth- 714 is really #2. Hank Aaron has 755 and should be #1, but Barry Bonds**** has 762 but he used steroids. In my mind and the mind of all MLB fans, Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, Canseco, etc. records are all shattered and never happened.
