The Houston Texans began playing in the NFL in 2002.
Owner Bob McNair succeeded in bringing football back to Houston after a 5 year absence. The former Houston team, the Oilers, fled to Tennessee for a sweet heart stadium deal. They eventually became the team now known as the Tennessee Titans.
Back in Houston Bob McNair made a move to bring football back to South East Texas after failing to land an NHL team. The NFL was in the process of awarding the rights to a 32nd team, needed in order to create a balanced schedule. Originally, in 1999, the 32nd franchise was awarded to Los Angeles. However due to stadium and potential new stadium location and funding issues, that decision was overturned.
McNair stepped in and pressed his claim and was awarded the NFL's 32nd team. He paid a princely sum of Seven Hundred Million dollars ($700,000,000) for the expansion franchise now known as the Houston Texans.
After the merger of the AFL and NFL in 1970, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks were the only new teams to enter the League in the 1970s. Both entered the NFL in 1976.
