There are various reasons that Stalin pretended that he was close to Lenin. For example, he thought that it would gain him support.
In November, 1929, Stalin gained full power in the Soviet Union after expelling Nikolai Bukharin from the Politburo thereby eliminating his last remaining rival for control of the Soviet Union. Stalin had exercised partial power together with Grigory Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev after Lenin suffered his first stroke on May 25, 1922. After Lenin's death Stalin continued in partial power as he eliminated all rivals to his leadership and at last gained full power over the Soviet Union.
Joseph Stalin followed Lenin as leader of the Sovoey Union. After Lenin's death, he was followed by a triumvirate of Joseph Stalin, Grigori Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev. Stalin eventually ousted them and took virtual sole power in 1929 but did not become the dictator he is remembered as until about 1932.
If you are talking about WWI, Joseph Stalin was yet not an important member of the Communist party in Russia. He became the General Secretary under Lenin and used that position to gain power. He retained that title throughout his rule, but a more appropriate title might have been "dictator" or "tyrant".

After the death of Lenin
Stalin didn't gain anything.. But ruined his own hereafter.

After Lenin had his stroke Russia was led by a troika of three people, Joseph Stalin, Gregory Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev. Stalin did not gain complete control of the country until 1929.

He deceived them by putting on a front of respect and honor towards their beloved, idolized Lenin. When Lenin died, Stalin made it seem as though he was appointed successor, when in reality Lenin had tried and expose Stalin in his Testaments. Originally, he had been elected as Chief Secretary (something which Lenin regretted later on.) And used his powers to steadily grow and gain followers. Acted as a humble, friendly man. But the Russians would soon learn this cover was completely false. He also embraced his "Russianism" which was what the Russians wanted in their leader - a native, someone like them. This all helped him become Dictator of the Soviet Union in December 1929.
