The National League began in 1876 and the American League started in 1901. The Cincinnati Reds were the first professional team founded in 1869 and were known as the Red Stockings back then.
The town of Baltimore has a rich baseball history, both of major league teams and minor league teams. Baltimore began as a major league baseball town, then became a minor league baseball town, and finally, back to a major league baseball town. The first Baltimore Orioles team began in 1882 as a charter member of the American Association, a major league at the time. They played in the AA through 1891 when the AA folded. They joined the National League and played until 1899 when they, along with the Washington Senators, Cleveland Spiders, and Louisville Colonels were contracted turning the NL into a league of 8 teams from 12 teams. The Orioles of the 1890s won three consecutive National League pennants (1894-1896) and had players such as John McGraw, Wilbert Robinson, Willie Keeler, Hughie Jennings, and Dan Brouthers, all future Hall of Famers. When the American League began play as a major league in 1901, Baltimore was awarded a team. McGraw and Robinson and several of the players from the Orioles teams of the 1890s were on this team along with future Hall of Famers Joe McGinnity and Roger Bresnahan. The Orioles moved to New York and became the Highlanders (and eventually, the Yankees) for the 1903 season. They were replaced by a team, also known as the Orioles, that played minor league ball in the International League through the 1953 season. This team won 9 International League titles and had the great Babe Ruth as a member for the first half of the 1914 season. The 1954 season saw major league baseball return to Baltimore when the St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles.
Yes. In 1990, a lockout by Major League Baseball canceled much of spring training and pushed back opening day. Because of the shortened spring training, teams were allowed to keep 28 players on their roster until May 1.
The average salary of a major league player was $5000, a considerable sum but not equal to today's millionaires. The highest salaries were around $20,000, which made the $80,000 paid to Babe Ruth in 1931 an extraordinary expenditure.
Going back to 1871, out of 17172 baseball players, 8240 have pitched in at least one game, 48%
A Major League Baseball team optioning one of their players means they are sending a player that is on their 40-man roster back to one of their Minor League Baseball rosters, players that are not on their 40-man rosters are not optioned to one of the team's Minor League rosters instead they will just be re-assigned to their Minor League rosters during Spring Training.
No.
There's no limit to substitutions in MLB. Players who have left the game can't be substituted back in, so the limiting factor is the number of players available on the roster (limited to 25 for most of the season).
Rosin bags are still on the back slope of every major league pitchers mound.
Yes. Sometimes players do it after a guy first joins a new team as well
The first player from the negro leagues to play major league baseball was back in 1947 by Jackie Robinson.

In Major League Baseball, there's no specific limit on substitutions. However, a team's active roster for most of the season is limited to 25 players, and a player who has left the game can't come back, so a team could use no more than 14 substitutes before they run out of available players.

Farm teams are Major Leage affiliates. They are used to take raw, young, players and improve their game in hopes that one day they can help the Major League club. Also, often times injured Major Leaguers will play on farm teams to get back into the swing of playing baseball.
