Athens, Greece was one of the birthplaces of democracy. Athenian democracy was a direct democracy in which every citizen voted directly on issues of importance, rather than electing representatives to vote for them.
It was neither an empire nor a republic. The first thing to understand is that "Ancient Greece" was not a unified political body (as was the Roman Republic/Empire) but rather a collection of independent city-states that operated under their own forms of government. Athens, for example, had a form of democratic government, while Sparta was under the rule of a king.
1. Athens is defeated in the Peloponnesian War 2. Phillip of Macedon conquers Greece. 3.Greece falls under Roman Control 4.Rome falls to the goths.
"Ancient Greece" was not a kingdom, it was a geographical region made up of several poleis (sing. polis) such as Athens, Sparta, Thebes etc. Each polis had its own forms of government, which evolved over time. Sparta had a bi-monarchy (two kings) and a council of elders; Athens had an oligarchy, then tyrants, then a democracy. During the golden age of Athens, the most famous leader was Pericles. He was a political and military leader, but never a king. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actually... Greece was a kingdom and the QUEEN was YOUR MOM
None. Citizens had rights, non-citizens (including all women, children, slaves and aliens) had no rights, but were given some tolerance and privileges according to their usefulness and good behaviour.
because most of Greece is on mountains which made it hard for one ruler to control all of Greece so they each had city-states under different government but they had the same religion and language
Under the leadership Pericles, Athens developed a direct democracy. Large numbers of male citizens took part in the affairs of government.
The council varied as various forms of government were tried out. Under the oligarchies it was comprised of aristocrats. Under the democracy it was elected citizens who carried out the dictates of the assembly of the citizens.
The golden age of Greece was under Pericles who was an enlightened dictator.
Pericles ruled during the golden age of Athens
They both ran under a polis style government although Sparta ran under an oligarchy but Athens was run under a democracy.AnswerAthens and Sparta were the two city-states in ancient Greece. They represents physical prowess (Sparta) and intellect (Athens)... Greece was very powerful in those times possessing both. Renowned warriors and philosophers came from Greece also.
under the U.S system of government the citizens?

In Rome women were citizens and had the rights which citizenship conferred, expect for the right to vote and to hold public office. In Athens and the rest of Greece women were not considered citizens. Expect for Sparta they had no legal personhood and were under the guardianship of their kurios (lord, master) who was the father (or if dead, her uncle or brothers) or the husband.

The capital of Greece is Athens. On a side note, this question should be under another category. It has nothing to do with Hungary=)
The capital of the Republic of Greece is ATHENS. The capital of the Republic of Cyprus is NICOSIA. The two nations do not share one capital or one government. They are wholly distinct and self-sovereign nations. The only governmental commonality that they have is EU membership. In the 1970s, there was an attempt to perform Enosis, which would have united Cyprus and Greece under a Greek government. But this was cut short both by the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus (which created the Turkish-Occupied zone of Cyprus) and by the Greek Cypriots wresting control of their government back from the Greek Unionists.
Although historical records are not completely clear, it is generally agreed that near the beginning of the 5th century B.C.E., democracy first appeared in Athens -- and perhaps this was its first appearance throughout the world. Under the leadership of Cleisthenes, the Athenians overcame yet another dictatorial ruler and then instituted a variety of reforms that placed power in the hands of citizens and otherwise instituted democratic practices throughout Athenian government.
