If you're in the gay community you would understand. Too often rumours go around about celebrities being gay, and a lot of them are either jealousy, hopefulness or viciousness, but more often than not, if it's TRUE then most sociable guys in the gay community know the truth, because more likely than not, one of their friends will have had a secret hook-up with a guy that turned out to be said celebrity, in this instance Ian Thorpe.

All that aside, he grew up in the shire and he speaks like an oxford st queen. Yes, the two are mutually exclusive. Unless of course the boy from the shire was gay and hung out in Darlinghurst excessively.

Ian Thorpe is openly gay.

In a July 2014 televised interview with British talk show host Michael Parkinson Thorpe came out as gay, after years of denying his homosexuality publicly.

He stated "I'm comfortable saying I'm a gay man. And I don't want people to feel the same way I did. You can grow up, you can be comfortable and you can be gay." He added "I am telling the world that I am gay … and I hope this makes it easier for others now, and even if you've held it in for years, it feels easier to get it out.

In 2016 he began dating model Ryan Channing.
