After the 2003 Detroit Tigers had a 43 win-119 loss season i remember reading in the newspaper that if in 2004, they tied the record for single season improvement they still would not have a winnning record. I rember working back and calculating that if they tied that record they would have a .500 record (81-81) Therefore even though i didnt remember the actual number, by remebering all of those other facts, I can work backwords and figure out with a calculator that the record is 38.
The 1906 Chicago Cubs (who hold the National League record) and the 2001 Seattle Mariners (who hold the American League record) both won a Major League record 116 games. The Mariners played a 162 game season, and went 116-46. The Cubs had ten fewer losses, as they were playing a 154 game season, and they had two rainouts that they didn't make up.
Neither of these teams won the World Series that season. The Cubs lost the World Series to Chicago's other baseball team, the White Sox, 4 games to 2. The 1906 Cubs are best remembered for their Tinker to Evers to Chance double play combination. The 2001 Mariners are best remembered as the team that let go three of the greatest stars of their generation (Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr., and Alex Rodriguez) and then tied the MLB record for most wins in a season.
Note: Most MLB losses was by the 62 Mets 120. If you count all the way back to 1899 the Cleveland Spiders lost 134 games.
As far as I've researched, Cy Young, a Hall of famer (1937 electee) and the all time leader in wins with 511, had an 18 win increase from 1890 to 1891 from 9 wins to 27. Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson went from 0 wins in 1900 (0-3 record) to 20 wins in 1901 (20-17 record), a 20 win increase. Hall of Famer Jack Chesbro went from 21 wins in 1903 (21-15 record) to 41 wins in 1904 (41-12 record), a 20 win increase. I don't know that Baseball keeps this record but there are probably others, especially in the 1800s when pitchers pitched every day or other day, that have a higher increase than those listed here.
The Chicago Cubs won 116 games in 1906, and the Seattle Mariners won 116 in 2001. The Cubs record was achieved in a 154 game season, giving them the best winning percentage in baseball history. The Mariners had the benefit of a 162 game season when they tied the Cubs' record of 116 wins.
The MLB record for fewest wins by a team in a season was set by the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. They won 20 games that season and lost 134. The 134 losses is also an MLB record for most losses by a team in a season.
Cleveland Indians - 18 wins
