I'm not for sure if this is going to answer your question completely, but I'll try. Modern Major League Baseball refers, to the game we are observing being played today. The pre-modern era , which is roughly dated from the 1850'S to about 1915, give or take a couple of years, was different in many aspects. One major one being pitchers tossed the ball underhand from a distance of only 50 feet. The great Cy Young pitched a large part of his career under those guidlines. And great hitters like Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie also played during these times. I 've read articles , that state the ball used then was much softer and not as "lively" hence the "dead ball" era and the "live ball" era. There was no regulations on bats:size, shape, weight, etc. I 've seen pictures of bats used in those times, and some are flat , and one was shaped like something you would see in a game of jai alai. There has probably been a number of other changes , but those are just a few of the major ones, that can still be directly seen on the field today.
