Horses can only run in the Kentucky Derby as a three year old. As such, no horse ever runs the Derby more than once.
'My Old Kentucky Home' is played at the Kentucky Derby by the University of Louisville Marching Band while the horses are paraded to the starting post. It was composed by Stephen Collins Foster [July 4, 1826 - January 13, 1864]. It has been part of the traditions of the Kentucky Derby since at least 1930.
Very fast are the horses in the Kentucky Derby. The winning horses tend to run the 1-1/4 mile [2 kilometer; 10 furlong] racetrack in just over two minutes. But two horses have beaten even that speed. In 2001, Monarchos [b. 1998] had the winning time of 1 minute 59.97 seconds. The record still is 1 minute 59-2/5 seconds by Secretariat [March 30, 1970 - October 4, 1989] in 1973.
