Candlestick Park's ground breaking began on August 12, 1958, the stadium first opened on April 12, 1960. It was the original home of the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball until 1999. It has been the home of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers since 1971.

The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, formerly the Emerald Bowl and the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl, has been played since 2002 at AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants. Since 2008, the St. Petersburg Bowl has been played at Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays. In 2010, the Pinstripe Bowl will be held at the new Yankee Stadium in New York.
