Aluminum is a natural element, the 13th element in the Periodic Table. Aluminum is a soft metal. It is plentiful in the earth's crust and is usually found as aluminum oxide ore. Because aluminum binds very tightly to oxygen atoms, a huge amount of electricity is required to refine the metal from the ore. Once an object is cast from aluminum (such as your Baseball bat) it oxidizes almost instantly in air. However, oxidation on aluminum forms a very strong and secure protective layer. Aluminum will not corrode unless exposed to extreme acids or very high temperatures.
Aluminum is an element, just like gold or oxygen. The smallest unit of an element is the atom. Compounds are made up of multiple elements. For example, the compound water is made up of two hydrogen atoms, and one oxygen atom. Aluminum however, does not have constituent elemental parts.
