A player is called a "rental player" when a team that thinks it has a good shot at going a long way in the playoffs trades for a guy with 1 year left on his contract. This player is usually a player, often a veteran, whose contract runs out at the end of the season and the team knows it can't , or won't , resign him when the season is over. The team , in effect, "rents" this player for the season in hopes he will help them win a championship, or at least go a long way in the playoffs.
