As the losing team will lose the opportunity to gain two points and the winning team will gain two points, the difference in "potential"points is four, thus a four point game. It is only used in Ice Hockey circles for unknown reasons. All ice hockey commentators would announce "Its a four point game tonight" whenever two teams were in such a tight race.
