He was the first African American to be a professional Baseball player. He opened up a new door for athletes of any sport and he sort of kick started the Civil Rights Movement because he broke a major color barrier that people said would never be broken.

Jackie Robinson became the first Major League Baseball. He was signed to a contract by the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers. In his first season, he won the Rookie of the Year award for the National League. He did have a positive impact on civil rights as his outstanding play on the baseball field, awakened other baseball clubs to tap into the baseball talent in the so-called "Negro Leagues". He and the Dodgers opened the door of opportunity for Blacks. ( Blacks was the term of today's African American ) It took courage to become the first Black player. He became an example of the easing of racial problems in America. He also gave Black people a boost in morale.
